The composition theme “A Huge Mistake” lends itself to a plethora of story possibilities. Students tend to write stories that revolve around a very specific mistake, such as going to school on the wrong day, studying for the wrong exam, taking the wrong bus somewhere, etc.
Here’s what Jamie did for her composition:
Jamie’s story stands out because she relates an incident of two best friends whose shopping trip—and friendship–goes disastrously awry because of their selfishness and lack of self control. The “huge mistake” is not a single event; rather, it’s a whole series of events based on these two character traits.
Jamie’s composition also captures the reader’s attention because she sprinkles vivid descriptions throughout her story. The two girls in the story don’t just spot “a beautiful skirt”—which is a typical way that students describe a key object in their stories. Instead, the skirt is described in such vivid detail that the reader, and not just the writer, can visualise the prized item.
Additionally, Jamie laces her story with purposeful dialogue which gives the reader a fuller understanding of her characters’ thoughts and feelings, as well as effectively moves the story action along.
In terms of Language, this composition includes interesting adjectives, vivid verbs and specific nouns. Jamie also includes an idiom and an interesting simile to add spice to her description of the main characters.
